Quality over quantity

Everyone has heard that saying at least once in their life: quality over quantity. It makes sense. Why would I want many mediocre products over one good one? Or 10 fake friends over 2 people who will stick with you til the end? If we’ve heard that principle so many times, why isn’t it sticking? Why do we keep falling for materialism and ” overconsumption core”?

It depends. For some people, buying clothes or products, even if they don’t need them, makes them feel good. Had a bad day? Buy that jacket you saw once on TikTok, it’ll make you feel better. The dopamine release you get from shopping is brief. Therefore, you keep buying more. Brands feed off of that; “50 % off”, “Buy one, get one!” or “Limited edition, do NOT miss out!” are all tactics we’ve fallen for. The pleasure and the reward make a deadly combination.

The others are influenced by the rich and think that to fit in, you need to be like them. The best example is “affordable luxury”. By affordable, I do not mean vintage or thrifted. I love vintage designer items. I would rather have a vintage Dior bag than a 2025 Miu Miu shirt. Sue me. No, I think sites like “The RealReal” or “Vinted” are perfect. What I mean by affordable luxury is the luxury sold by high fashion brands to make you feel like you belong, that you are like others. Don’t get me wrong, I love designer clothing more than anything. However, their bags with the logos all over that they sell you for “less” than a plain one? Those are tacky to me. It is not because you own designer that you’re like them. Why would you want to be? Quiet luxury is always better.

Let me circle back to the topic at hand: quality over quantity. Be careful with the dopamine rush that comes from shopping. You do not need everything. Materialism makes you think you do, but trust me on this one, you’ll regret it. You do not need the Rimowa suitcase because every influencers has it. The world becomes more bland every time we fall for their publicities. I could go on and on about the effect of fast fashion on the environment, the fashion industry and originality. I’ll keep it brief for today: one good quality shirt made of 100% cotton is better than 5 mediocre shirt made with 100% NOT recycled polyester (I’ll talk about textiles in another segment).

Thank you for reading and no, you do not need another alo workout set 😉
